Apple TV+ has become a top choice for sci-fi fans, and Dark Matter was one of its biggest hits in 2024. The show is based on Blake Crouch’s novel and follows Jason Dessen (played by Joel Edgerton), who gets kidnapped and wakes up in a world that feels completely unfamiliar.
With stars like Jennifer Connelly and Alice Braga, the series became so popular that Apple TV+ decided to renew it for a second season, even though the first season covered the entire book. Crouch recently shared an exciting update on Instagram, confirming that Season 2 is now in production and even posting behind-the-scenes photos.
No one knows exactly where Dark Matter will go in Season 2, but since Crouch is still deeply involved, fans can trust that the story will stay true to his vision. While the show had a few differences from the book—like giving Leighton Vance (Dayo Okeniyi) and another Dessen family member, Maximillian, bigger roles—the first season ended the same way: Jason 1 finally reunited with his family.
In the book, Jason 2 dies trying to take back the life he lost, but in the show, he changes course and decides to help Jason 1 after realizing his own mistakes.

At first glance, Dark Matter might not seem like a multiverse story, but it actually is—just not in the usual comic book way. In the show, Jason 2 creates a special box that lets people travel between different realities. To use it, a person must take a compound that turns off a part of their brain that isn’t built to understand this kind of travel.

The multiverse in Dark Matter works in a unique way—every choice a person makes creates a new version of them in another reality. So, if you pick steak for dinner instead of chicken, there’s another version of you in a different world who made the opposite choice. Over time, these small choices can lead to completely different lives.
Dark Matter Season 2 is now being filmed! If you haven’t seen it yet, you can watch the first season now on Apple TV+.
