Leonardo DiCaprio has shared which Christopher Nolan film is his favorite—and interestingly, it isn’t Inception, even though he played the lead role.
In Nolan’s 2010 sci-fi thriller Inception, DiCaprio portrayed Dom Cobb, a skilled thief who uses a highly unusual method to commit his crimes: stealing secrets by infiltrating people’s dreams. With the help of Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), Ariadne (Elliot Page), and others, Cobb faces the dangers of corporate espionage while battling the weight of his troubled past.
During an interview with Collider, DiCaprio, joined by actor Benicio del Toro, revealed their favorite Christopher Nolan film:
DICAPRIO: “Dark Knight.”
DEL TORO: “Dark Knight. Yeah. Batman.”
Even though he starred in Inception, DiCaprio picked The Dark Knight as his favorite Nolan film. Released in 2008, The Dark Knight was the second installment in Nolan’s Batman trilogy and became the most successful of the series.
The DC adaptation earned numerous accolades, including an Academy Award for Best Actor for the late Heath Ledger, who gave a legendary performance as the Joker. The film went on to gross over $1 billion globally and is still considered one of the greatest and most successful films ever made.
Inception also achieved major success, earning more than $830 million worldwide and collecting multiple Academy Awards. However, DiCaprio himself did not receive the same level of recognition, and the movie continues to intrigue audiences with its complex sci-fi storyline.
DiCaprio’s body of work remains highly acclaimed, with Inception standing out as one of his strongest roles alongside classics such as Catch Me If You Can (2002), Titanic (1997), Django Unchained (2012), and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013).
Although some may be surprised that DiCaprio favors The Dark Knight over Inception, it highlights both his respect for Nolan’s films and his admiration for one of the director’s most celebrated achievements.
I, for one, am not shy to admit that The Dark Knight is my favorite Nolan film. It marked a pivotal moment for superhero cinema, driven by Heath Ledger’s unforgettable portrayal of the Joker. The film continues to stand as a benchmark of flawless filmmaking, with Christian Bale delivering an iconic take on Bruce Wayne/Batman.
Both del Toro and DiCaprio were in complete agreement on Nolan’s The Dark Knight. Perhaps DiCaprio’s lack of awards recognition for Inception left some lingering disappointment. Nevertheless, Inception has secured its place as a fan-favorite, celebrated for its mind-bending visuals and Hans Zimmer’s legendary score.
