Kingpin actor Vincent D’Onofrio shared how he and Charlie Cox’s feedback on Daredevil: Born Again’s original plans caused the show to pause production and undergo rewrites.
Season 1 of Daredevil: Born Again is unique because Marvel Studios scrapped their original plans partway through production, letting go of the first writers and choosing to rewrite and reshoot new episodes instead.
The season was first announced as 18 episodes but was later cut down to 9. The changes also brought back fan-favorite characters from the Netflix series, including Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson, Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher, and Wilson Bethel’s Bullseye — a return that fans were grateful for.
At LA Comic Con 2025, Vincent D’Onofrio explained how he and Charlie Cox felt a responsibility to maintain the level of quality that fans expected from Daredevil.
We had many, many conversations about the fact that we were on a train that we felt we needed to stop. And it was a big decision to make for us to be truthful with the studio and with our bosses and with the producers,
the actor said.
Basically our plan was just to give notes, give notes, give notes, give note. We would talk about it, we were in on each of our own notes, we’d share emails, and send the group emails, and none of it was working. They weren’t taking us seriously. And then we finally got the ear of who we needed to get the ear of. And we were so lucky, unfortunately, it wasn’t lucky for other people, but the actors went on strike. And then when that happened, our bosses, the guys who run the studio, were allowed to look at the 6 [episodes] we had shot. And that’s when they started [rethinking it].

Because of this, Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 ended up being a mix of material from the original 18-episode plan and new content that brought back characters from the Netflix series and aligned more with what fans expected from a Daredevil story.
Considering that Season 3 of the Netflix series closed with Wilson Bethel’s Benjamin Poindexter stepping fully into his role as Bullseye, I would have been pretty frustrated if Born Again had skipped over him. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case — both for me and for the citizens of New York.
