Matthew Lillard is officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe but not in the way fans might expect. The Scream and Scooby-Doo actor will star in Daredevil: Born Again season 2 as a mysterious new antagonist named Mr. Charles, facing off against Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio).
Known for his eclectic roles from Scream’s Stu Macher to Twin Peaks: The Return’s Bill Hastings Lillard has long been a fan favorite. Yet, his leap into Marvel’s gritty Daredevil world has sparked curiosity. Unlike some of his more eccentric past roles, his new character won’t rely on flashy costumes or creature effects.
Marvel Television and Animation Head Brad Winderbaum confirmed the casting and character details in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “He plays a character named Mr. Charles,” Winderbaum revealed.
The reveal, however, raises more questions than it answers. Across his comic history since 1964, Daredevil has battled assassins, mob bosses, super-powered criminals and even, at one point, a demon-possessed vacuum cleaner but never anyone named Mr. Charles.
Winderbaum elaborated on how the new character fits into the story’s political and power dynamics.
The story is about power. When Wilson Fisk takes over New York, not just as a mayor but as a king in a way, it puts him in a new class of power players on the international stage. Matthew Lillard’s character represents that.
he explained.
He went on to describe how Mr. Charles challenges Fisk in unexpected ways.
He’s a bit of a new antagonist on the field, but he’s as influential in many ways as Fisk is. That power negotiation at a very high level of politics and international diplomacy is also fun to watch. He is dealing with Mr. Charles up here and Daredevil down here for different reasons. So he’s getting squeezed a little bit.
Winderbaum said
That dynamic puts Fisk between two opposing forces the rising political power of Mr. Charles and the relentless moral resistance of Matt Murdock (Daredevil).
While the series title recalls Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s 1986 comic arc Born Again where a drug-addicted Karen Page sells Daredevil’s secret identity to Kingpin, much of that story was already adapted into Netflix’s Daredevil season 3.
Instead, the upcoming second season of Born Again appears to draw inspiration from 1991’s Last Rites storyline by Al Milgrom and Mark Bagley, in which Daredevil systematically dismantles Kingpin’s empire in revenge.
If that’s the direction Marvel is taking, Lillard’s Mr. Charles could emerge as one of the MCU’s most intriguing new figures a powerful rival who challenges Fisk’s authority on a global scale while Daredevil battles him from the streets.
Daredevil: Born Again season 2 premieres March 4, 2026, on Disney+.
