Daniel Craig believes the Knives Out movies should be seen in theaters, so he’s hoping Netflix will give the upcoming third film, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, a longer theater release. Netflix only kept Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery in theaters for one week in 2022, but Craig thinks Knives Out 3 deserves a bigger theatrical run, he shared in an interview with Variety.
“Yes, I do,” Craig replied when asked if he thought Wake Up Dead Man should stay in theaters longer than a week.
The first Knives Out movie, released by Lionsgate in 2019, became a huge success, earning $312 million globally during the holiday season. Writer-director Rian Johnson even received an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay. Netflix later made a deal with Johnson for two Knives Out sequels, but the first sequel only ran in theaters for one week across the country.
Netflix gave Glass Onion a one-week release in theaters, partnering with major chains like AMC, Regal, and Cinemark to show the Knives Out sequel in 600 theaters, marking Netflix’s biggest theater release so far.
It was also the first Netflix film shown at AMC and Regal, as these chains usually don’t play Netflix movies due to streaming release rules. Glass Onion is still the only Netflix movie with such a wide release, and it’s unclear if Wake Up Dead Man will get the same treatment.
Rian Johnson returned as writer and director for the third Knives Out movie, which again stars Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc. The new cast includes Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.
The plot is still a secret, and Netflix plans to release Wake Up Dead Man in 2025.
