It’s not just the stunning animation that makes Dandadan stand out in episode 1. The rich comedy also kept viewers entertained. In an exclusive interview with GameRant, creator Yukinobu Tatsu talked about how important humor is in his manga series. He explained how comedy plays a key role in its success.
I believe comedy is at the heart of Dandadan. I focused a lot on how quickly emotions change throughout the story. A lot of the humor comes from timing, which was really important for the world we created. We worked hard to use visual timing to show the difference between serious character moments and the comedy, which we considered the most important part.
With its bold mix of the supernatural and paranormal, Dandadan always surprises readers with strange events and unique characters. Yukinobu Tatsu’s Dandadan is a special manga series that adds comedy to a thrilling story. After the success of the opening episodes, Tatsu shared:
I’m really happy to hear that you and others who watched the opening episodes noticed the visual part of the comedy. It feels great to know that it matches what we were aiming for.

While Okarun often gets a lot of attention, the story focuses on Momo Ayase. Tatsu wanted a female lead from the beginning, but he admitted that writing for a female character was a challenge because he didn’t have much experience.

It seems the creator put a lot of thought and effort into Momo’s character, as fans have been giving her a lot of praise. Tatsu also shared that Okarun was important for making Momo more likable, which was a smart choice since the two of them have won fans’ hearts.
