The family of one of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims is speaking out against Ariana Grande. They’re upset because Ariana once said she’d like to sit down with the serial killer. Recently, Ariana faced criticism for mentioning on a podcast that Dahmer was someone she’d want to have dinner with despite his history of killing and dismembering 17 men.
Ariana says she told a group of young fans about this early in her career during a Q&A session. Tony Hughes’ family, especially his mother Shirley, is upset after hearing Ariana’s comments. Shirley hopes Ariana realizes how hurtful her words are, as they bring up painful emotions for her.
Shirley was upset when Ariana laughed during the podcast about her interest in Dahmer. She wants Ariana and everyone to understand that families like hers feel real pain whenever Dahmer is mentioned.
Shirley thinks Ariana’s interest in Dahmer is disturbing and not right. She believes it’s not okay to joke about wanting to have dinner with someone like Dahmer, especially when talking to young people. Shirley also feels troubled that Ariana doesn’t seem to understand or care about the pain felt by the victims’ families.
Tony’s sister, Barbara, feels the comments make Dahmer seem glamorous, even though he was beaten to death in prison in 1994. She wants Ariana to apologize, so her fans understand this isn’t acceptable.
Ariana isn’t only interested in true crime stories like Dahmer’s. Many TV shows, movies, streaming services, and books profit greatly from this genre.
Tony’s family felt just as angry when the Netflix series “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” aired, featuring Evan Peters as the notorious cannibal.
At the time, creator Ryan Murphy defended his project by explaining that they had done extensive research and tried contacting 20 families and friends of the victims but hadn’t received any responses.
Barbara expressed her feelings about Ariana, saying,
“Unfortunately, she just doesn’t understand what we’ve been through until something like this happens to her or her family.”
