Christopher Nolan recently led a discussion with Denis Villeneuve after showing Dune: Part Two and couldn’t stop praising it. He called the sequel “a miraculous job of adaptation.” The Oscar-winning director of Oppenheimer joins big names like Steven Spielberg and other top filmmakers in applauding Dune: Part Two. The movie is one of Warner Bros.’ main hopes for Oscars this year.
I watched the second half, and it’s amazing how they turned it into such an incredible ending to the story, I do have one big question, though: Usul, Muad’Dib, Paul, Lisan al Gaib—how many names can one character have and still expect us to keep track of them all?
Nolan said
There’s actually a serious point behind that, Most movies based on books try to simplify and cut things down. But watching these films, especially the second one, I felt like it did the opposite. It dug deeper into the story, embraced the complexity, and expanded the world even beyond what’s in the book.

Advertisement Back in March, after Dune: Part Two hit theaters, Spielberg had his own Q&A with Villeneuve at the Directors Guild of America. During the talk, he called the sequel “one of the best science-fiction movies I’ve ever seen.”
Spielberg told Villeneuve,
Some filmmakers are amazing at creating entire worlds, and there aren’t many who can do it. We know some of the greats—like [Georges] Méliès, Disney, Kubrick, George Lucas, Ray Harryhausen, Fellini, Tim Burton, Wes Anderson, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott, and Guillermo del Toro. The list is short, but I truly believe you’re one of the newest members of this group. And that scene with the sandworms surfing the desert? It’s one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen!
Villeneuve is in the running for Best Director after the Oscars shockingly overlooked him for the first Dune movie. Actor Josh Brolin recently told Variety he’d be upset if the Academy skips over Villeneuve again.
If he doesn’t get nominated this year, I’ll stop acting, This movie is even better than the first one. Watching it felt like it blew my mind. Denis is truly one of the greatest filmmakers we have. If the Oscars mean anything at all, they’ll give him the recognition he deserves.
