In the exciting and unpredictable world of Marvel, things don’t always go as planned, even behind the scenes. For Anthony Mackie, playing Falcon, he believed his character would be killed off in Avengers: Endgame.
Anthony Mackie thought his character might be in danger because of “racial bias,” so he was ready to say goodbye to Falcon. But everything changed when his co-star Chris Evans showed him the script, revealing that he would become the next Captain America!
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has many superheroes, and Captain America is one of the most beloved. After Chris Evans finished his time as the iconic hero in Avengers: Endgame, Anthony Mackie, who played Falcon, stepped in to take on the role.
This change was not just exciting, but also important, especially with the history of race and color-based biases in movies. Seeing a Black Captain America marked a big step forward for the MCU and meant a lot to fans around the world who had always hoped to see someone like them in such an important role.

Anthony Mackie had no idea he was going to become the next Captain America. In a recent interview with Fandango, he shared that one day he was relaxing at his friend and co-star Chris Evans’ house. Evans asked if he had read the new script, and Mackie was surprised when Evans seemed shocked that he hadn’t.
You know, being black, I’m like ‘Imma die, Damn!’ They’re getting rid of me, man. I don’t even cause no trouble. I stand in the back, I don’t bother nobody, right?
Mackie, being his usual self, was surprised by Evans’ reaction and thought his character, Falcon, was going to die in Avengers: Endgame. But when Evans finally told him the truth, Mackie couldn’t help but jump with excitement like a little kid!
It was at Chris Evans’ house that Anthony Mackie learned he would be the next Captain America in the MCU. Although he had the Endgame script, Mackie hadn’t read through it. It wasn’t until Evans gave him the last ten pages that he realized he was about to become the MCU’s next big hero!
In his recent interview with Fandango, Mackie shared how his good friend and co-star, Evans, took him to his “man cave” and handed him the script.
He gets the new script, he goes to the last ten pages and he goes, ‘Read it.’ So, me, thinking they killed me off, he’s just looking at me like, ‘Huh?’… I’, like, ‘So why did you give me the shield?’ He’s like, ‘Because you’re f–king Captain America.’
The two couldn’t hold back their excitement, hugging and jumping up and down, just like “two 12-year-olds meeting Mickey Mouse,” as Anthony Mackie put it. It’s heartwarming to see them celebrating such a big moment together, and as MCU fans, it’s a memory they’ll always treasure.
