Charlie Puth has officially shut down rumors that he auditioned for a role in the upcoming two-part film adaptation of Wicked.
Speculation surfaced after an X user claimed that several high-profile artists including the “We Don’t Talk Anymore” singer, had tried out for roles in the star-studded musical led by Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Jonathan Bailey.
Responding directly to the post on Nov. 29, Puth addressed the claim with a light-hearted clarification, writing: “I never auditioned for Wicked I would be so bad lol.”
The viral tweet also suggested that celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Shawn Mendes, Renee Rapp, Katy Perry, Harry Styles, Amanda Seyfried, Nick Jonas, Joe Jonas, Dove Cameron, Lea Michele and Jesse J. were among those who pursued roles in the franchise.
While Puth debunked the rumor, several stars on the list have previously confirmed their involvement in the casting process most notably Nick and Joe Jonas, both of whom auditioned for the role of Fiyero.
“We’ve never talked about this publicly, but we both auditioned for the same role—Joe and I,” Nick shared on the Armchair Expert podcast in September 2024. “It was for Wicked, actually.”
Joe added that despite competing for the same character, their brotherly support remained intact:
“I said ‘Go in there and kill it.’ It has to be one of us.”
Amanda Seyfried has also spoken about her dedication to auditioning for the role of Glinda while simultaneously filming The Dropout, telling Backstage in 2022, “I have dreams that I’m still auditioning for Wicked… I literally bent over backwards while playing the hardest role of my life.”
Director Jon M. Chu has previously emphasized that the final casting choices were undeniable, noting that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were destined for their roles. “When those two walk in… the moment you look in their eyes, there’s no denying it, they just took those roles,” he said in a December 2024 interview with CBS News.
