Today marks a disappointing moment for ’90s kids, as accessing Cartoon Network shows has now become more difficult than ever. With Courage the Cowardly Dog being removed from HBO Max’s library, the platform no longer hosts any classic Cartoon Network content. These shows, once beloved in the late ’90s and early 2000s, have become increasingly inaccessible. The removal is part of a wider trend, as HBO Max has been steadily pulling titles over recent months. Now, fans are left hoping these shows will eventually find new streaming platforms.
As reported by a new source, only 11 Cartoon Network shows are currently available on HBO Max, with the oldest being Adventure Time, which premiered in 2017. The show has remained relevant thanks to its multiple spin-offs, one of which has already been greenlit for a second installment. Other titles still streaming on the platform include The Amazing World of Gumball and Craig of the Creek.
The decision to remove Courage the Cowardly Dog and other Cartoon Network series stems from Warner Bros’ shift away from kids’ content, aiming instead to focus on family and adult programming. Some of the shows previously pulled include The Powerpuff Girls, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Ed, Edd, n Eddy, Teen Titans, and The Looney Tunes, among others.
Is Warner Bros Still Making Animated Content?
While HBO Max continues to scale back its library, Warner Bros has revealed a number of upcoming animated projects, many of which are reboots of well-known titles. Among them is a Steven Universe spin-off titled Lars of the Stars, which will center on Captain Lars and the Off Colors, and aims to further explore Steven Universe’s lore. The studio also confirmed that Fionna and Cake, the Adventure Time spin-off, will be getting a second season, with production for it recently completed.
In addition, a reboot of Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends was announced last year. Titled Foster’s Funtime for Imaginary Friends, this version is being developed specifically for a preschool audience.
Beyond the Cartoon Network universe, Warner Bros has shared that My Adventures with Superman is set to return for a third season, though an official release date is still pending. They also confirmed that Blue Beetle will be making a comeback in the DCU, this time as an animated series, with Xolo Maridueña continuing in his role as the titular superhero.
