Carrie Underwood’s rendition of “America the Beautiful” at Donald Trump’s inauguration took an unexpected turn when an audio malfunction forced the Grammy-winning artist to perform the patriotic anthem a cappella. The incident occurred during Monday’s ceremony inside the Capitol Rotunda as Trump was sworn in for his second term as the 47th president of the United States.
Following Trump’s inauguration speech, Underwood and the Armed Forces Chorus were introduced to perform. As the music for “America the Beautiful” began to play, the audio abruptly cut out. After an awkward pause, a White House official approached Underwood, prompting her to sing without instrumental accompaniment. Turning to the audience, Underwood encouraged, “You know the words, help me out here,” before delivering the song in an impromptu a cappella performance alongside the chorus.

Underwood’s decision to perform at the inauguration has sparked mixed reactions. The American Idol winner faced backlash after announcing her participation on January 13, with critics questioning her choice to sing at the event. However, she has also received notable support, including an endorsement from Whoopi Goldberg on The View.
I stand behind [Underwood], If I believe I have the right to make up my mind to go perform someplace, I believe [she has] the same right. I have to support. It doesn’t mean I’m particularly interested. I won’t be watching, but that’s just me. Art is art, and you have a right to perform where you want to perform.
