Netflix’s Beef premiered in April 2023 and became one of the most talked-about shows of the year. Created by Lee Sung Jin, the dark comedy-drama follows a heated feud between two strangers, played by Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, after a road rage incident.
The show was so popular that it won 8 Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited Series and acting awards for Yeun and Wong. With the first season wrapped up, fans wondered how Netflix would continue the story. The answer came last fall when Netflix announced that Beef Season 2 would take on a new anthology format.
This change means a completely new cast for the show. One of the new stars, Carey Mulligan, confirmed during Sundance that filming for Season 2 has officially begun. The second season will include eight 30-minute episodes and feature Mulligan alongside Oscar Isaac, Charles Melton, and Cailee Spaeny. This time, the story will follow a young couple who witness a heated argument between their boss and his wife.
We just started, Almost everything [is different]. But it’s still [creator Lee Sung Jin] being brilliant. It’s a completely new story, and if I say anything else, then a laser beam will appear on my head. But it’s very exciting.
Mulligan told Variety
A magazine gave Beef a glowing review, calling it “without question, a strong debut” and describing it as “some of the best dramatic television ever made.”
The review praised how all the storylines come together in the end, highlighting that some of the final episodes are among the best drama ever seen on TV. It noted that the show’s unique style and tone might take some time to connect with viewers, but once it does, Beef turns into an exciting drama full of twists. The series handles deep topics with a mix of humor and seriousness.
