Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford’s latest superhero adventure, Captain America: Brave New World, is set to reign supreme at the box office during this year’s sluggish Oscars weekend.
According to Deadline, the newest installment in Disney and Marvel’s cinematic universe is projected to pull in $15 million across 3,800 theaters by Sunday, bringing its domestic total to an estimated $163.6 million.
Meanwhile, the only major new release this weekend, Focus Features’ deep-sea thriller Last Breath, is expected to make a modest splash with $7.3 million. The film starring Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu, Finn Cole, and Cliff Curtis follows a team of deep-sea divers on a perilous mission to rescue a trapped crew member hundreds of feet below the ocean’s surface.
‘The Monkey’ Slips to No. 3, ‘Paddington in Peru’ Holds Steady
After debuting at No. 2 last weekend, Osgood Perkins’ horror-comedy The Monkey is projected to slip to third place with an estimated $6.2 million from 3,227 theaters, pushing its domestic total to $24.4 million.
Sony’s Paddington in Peru is expected to bring in another $4.5 million from 3,705 theaters, increasing its North American earnings to $31.1 million.
Rounding out the top five is Universal and DreamWorks’ animated comedy Dog Man, which is predicted to add $4 million to its haul, bringing its domestic total to $83.8 million.
Oscar-Nominated Films Struggle at the Box Office
Surprisingly, none of this year’s Best Picture nominees managed to crack the domestic top 10 in the lead-up to Sunday’s 97th Academy Awards. However, that trend could shift next weekend, as Oscar-winning films often see a boost in box office numbers following their victories.
Stay tuned for further updates as final domestic and international earnings roll in throughout the weekend.
