Captain America: Brave New World hit a big milestone just four days after its release. The movie, starring Anthony Mackie as the new Captain America, made nearly $90 million during its first weekend. That’s the second-best opening for the series. On its fourth day, it earned another $11 million, bringing its total in North America to over $100 million.
Captain America: Brave New World has earned $101 million in North America and $193 million worldwide. It’s expected to cross $200 million today. When that happens, it will surpass the total earnings of The Marvels, which became Marvel’s biggest flop despite costing $100 million more to make. Brave New World had a $180 million budget, making it one of the cheaper Phase Five films. In comparison, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 each cost over $250 million.
In the next few days, Captain America: Brave New World will pass the $176 million domestic earnings of Captain America: The First Avenger. Directed by Joe Johnston, The First Avenger was part of Marvel’s Phase One. While critics liked the movie, it didn’t do great at the box office, making about $370 million worldwide.
In 2014, Captain America: The Winter Soldier introduced Anthony Mackie to the franchise and earned over $700 million globally. Captain America: Civil War, often called an Avengers-style film, brought in more than $1.1 billion. Chris Evans starred as Captain America in all three movies before retiring after Avengers: Endgame.
Captain America: Brave New World hasn’t gotten the same praise as other Marvel movies. It has a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a B- CinemaScore, the lowest for the franchise. Collider’s Aidan Kelley even called it “one of the weakest entries” in the series.
Julius Onah directed the film, though he hadn’t worked on big-budget projects before. Reports say the production faced many challenges, leading to several reshoots. The movie also stars Harrison Ford and Giancarlo Esposito.
Captain America: Brave New World is now playing in theaters.
