Britney Spears hinted at a new movie project, but it’s not her biopic. On Friday (Aug. 30), the 42-year-old pop star posted a mysterious message online, just as rumors swirled that actress Emma Roberts wants to play Britney in a movie based on her best-selling memoir, The Woman in Me.
Britney Spears shared that her upcoming project isn’t a biopic, but a fictional musical where she plays a really smart character. She posted this on Instagram with a picture of a girl floating above two cats. She also mentioned how excited she is to work with someone as talented as Jon Chu.
Universal Pictures reportedly secured the rights to turn Britney Spears’ best-selling book into a movie. The Woman in Me tells the story of her journey to stardom, her relationship with Justin Timberlake, including when she got pregnant and had an abortion, and her life under a strict 13-year conservatorship.

According to Variety, Wicked director Jon M. Chu and Marc Platt are leading the movie’s development. In early August, Britney Spears shared on X (formerly Twitter) that she’s been working on a “secret project” with Marc Platt.
She wrote, “I’m excited to tell my fans that I’ve been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s made some of my favorite movies … stay tuned!”
In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, Emma Roberts was asked about rumors that Britney Spears’ longtime assistant, Felicia Culotta, suggested she would be the perfect actress to play Britney in a biopic. Roberts responded, “I love her assistant! It’s my dream to play Britney Spears.” Culotta mentioned in a TMZ interview that Emma’s past roles as a child star on Nickelodeon, like Unfabulous, were similar to Britney’s early years on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club.
Emma Roberts said, “It’s just a rumor, but I hope it comes true. I remember locking myself in my room and listening to Britney’s In the Zone album from 2003, telling myself, ‘I can’t leave until I memorize every word.'”
