Netflix has officially revealed that Season 5 of Bridgerton will spotlight Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling as its central romantic pairing, marking a major new chapter for the hit period drama.
The announcement came alongside a first-look teaser released on Tuesday, confirming that production is already underway in the UK for the upcoming eight-episode season. Created by Shonda Rhimes and based on Julia Quinn’s bestselling novels, the series continues to explore the love stories of the eight Bridgerton siblings.
According to Netflix’s official description, the fifth season will focus on Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd), the reserved and introverted middle daughter, as she navigates life two years after the death of her husband, John (Victor Alli).
A Love Story Marked by Loss and New Beginnings
As Francesca reenters society with practical intentions to remarry, her path takes an unexpected turn when Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza), John’s cousin, returns to London to manage the Kilmartin estate.
Netflix teases that Michaela’s arrival will stir complex emotions in Francesca, forcing her to question whether to follow societal expectations or embrace her deeper desires.
Francesca is described as someone who has long felt out of place in the world, while Michaela is portrayed as charming and vivacious on the surface but emotionally guarded beneath. The season will see Michaela confronting her vulnerabilities while also navigating her connection to her late cousin’s legacy and her growing bond with Francesca.
A Shift From the Books
The storyline marks a notable change from Bridgerton series, where Francesca’s love interest is Michael Stirling. The series has reimagined the character as Michaela, continuing its trend of adapting and modernizing elements of the original novels.
Francesca’s journey was already set in motion during Season 4, which depicted John’s death and subtly introduced her evolving connection with Michaela.
Looking Back at Previous Seasons
Season 4 of Bridgerton, released in two parts between January and February, focused on Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha).
Season 3, which premiered in two installments from May to June 2024, centered on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan).
Earlier seasons followed Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) in Season 2, and Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page) in the show’s debut season in December 2020.
What Comes Next for the Bridgerton Family
Following Season 4, several Bridgerton siblings remain at the center of future storylines, including Eloise (Claudia Jessie), Francesca, Gregory (Will Tilston) and Hyacinth (Florence Hunt).
While the book series follows a set order, the show has previously altered the sequence most notably swapping Benedict and Colin’s stories and continues to take creative liberties in its adaptation.
Netflix had already renewed Bridgerton for Seasons 5 and 6 in May 2025, though it had not confirmed at the time which sibling would take the spotlight next. Season 4 strongly hinted that Francesca would lead the upcoming installment, even though Eloise is next in line according to the books.
Meanwhile, Eloise’s arc continues to explore her resistance to the traditional marriage mart, though she has begun to show signs of warming to the idea through her younger sister Hyacinth’s excitement about entering society.
