The phrase “There’s no place like home…” sums up what many believe is the main message of Ted Lasso. Fans think the show is like a modern version of The Wizard of Oz. Since it first aired, people have shared theories about how it connects to the classic movie.
They’ve noticed details like Roy Kent’s tie-dye shirt that looks like the yellow brick road, Ted’s red sneakers, and even the Wizard of Oz-themed pinball machine in the second-to-last episode.
Ever since Wicked came out, fans have been buzzing about how Ted Lasso might have taken inspiration from L. Frank Baum’s classic story. They’ve pointed out plenty of clues, like Ted being from Kansas. Now, Brett Goldstein, the show’s writer and actor, told Entertainment Weekly that the Emmy-winning series was indeed leading us down the yellow brick road.
When asked if Ted Lasso is connected to The Wizard of Oz, Brett Goldstein said,
Oh yeah, there’s a lot of Wizard of Oz in the show. There’s no place like home, For Ted, there’s no place like Richmond F.C.
He explained that the pinball machine is a clue, showing that Ted’s story is about finding his way home.

Goldstein went further and explained which characters in Ted Lasso match those from The Wizard of Oz. He said,
I’m the Tin Man, Ted is Dorothy, Rebecca is the Lion, and Jamie is the Scarecrow.
talking about his character, Roy Kent, He added,
This is probably going to stir up some trouble,
Goldstein said with a grin.
Ted Lasso finished its three-season run in spring 2023. In the end, Ted (played by Jason Sudeikis) chose to go back to Kansas to be with his son. Before leaving, he helped the Richmond Greyhounds almost win it all and guided Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), Jamie (Phil Dunster), Roy (Brett Goldstein), and others to find happiness.
Jason Sudeikis has said before that Ted Lasso, as a story focused on Ted, is finished. But fans are still hopeful there could be more, maybe showing what happens to Richmond after Ted leaves.
This is definitely the last season of Ted’s story, that much I can say. As for everything else, there are lots of things to consider, but it all starts with the stories and the characters.
Sudeikis even hinted at the possibility, saying,
Fans are still hoping for more stories, but there are no official plans for a fourth season or spin-off yet. Maybe they could look to L. Frank Baum’s 13 other Land of Oz books for some inspiration?
