In 2024, many movies came out, most of them being sequels or based on stories we already knew. But a few stood out and won the hearts of critics, audiences, and even people in the entertainment world.
In a special feature on IndieWire, 65 directors shared their favorite films of 2024, and Bill Hader, the comedian and creator of Barry, joined in. With so many films to pick from, Hader chose Flow, an animated indie movie. Directed in Latvia, Flow got a lot of praise and won several awards, including nominations for a Critics’ Choice Award and a Golden Globe.
Flow tells the touching story of a black cat caught in a flood. The cat teams up with a dog, a capybara, a lemur, and a bird, and together they try to survive in a world changed by a big tsunami.
The best movie I saw this year was Flow,” “I’ve watched it three times now. It even makes me want to get a cat, and I’m allergic to cats!
Hader shared, praising the animated film.
Hader isn’t the only one praising Flow. The movie has an almost perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and viewers. It earned a 97% approval rating from critics, which gave it a Certified Fresh badge, and a 94% rating from the audience. Flow was created by Gints Zilbalodis, who co-wrote the script with Matīss Kaža.

Some of the most popular movies of the year were Anora and The Substance. But among the 65 directors, Bill Hader wasn’t the only one who picked Flow. David Lowery, who worked on the animated film Pete’s Dragon in 2016, also chose Flow as one of his favorites.
He called it “the most healing, hopeful cinematic experience of the year” and praised how personal CGI animation has become. Lowery said it made him want to hug his cats and even adopt a capybara.
Gints Zilbalodis, the director of Flow, also had his own favorite films of the year. Some of them were My Sunshine, Blue Sun Palace, Ghost Cat Anzu, Close Your Eyes, Dune: Part Two, Universal Language, Good One, The Village Next to Paradise, Look Back, and A Different Man.
Flow is now showing in theaters.
