Kris Marshall currently stars as Detective Humphrey Goodman in Beyond Paradise.
Beyond Paradise star Kris Marshall has shared how he found his way into acting. Despite failing his school exams and being fired from a job, he went on to land roles in My Family, Love Actually, and Death in Paradise.
In a recent interview, Kris opened up about his journey, which wasn’t always smooth, but led to a successful acting career. He is currently filming for his latest role as Detective Humphrey Goodman in Beyond Paradise.
After being expelled from school, Kris explained that he had two choices: retake his exams or try to become an actor.
Speaking to The Guardian, the Love Actually star said:
The only problem was, I had no idea how to get into the industry. Instead, I worked the odd, crazy job to make ends meet – doing shifts in a toothpaste factory or in the laundry of an abattoir.
That one was pretty grim – the smell will never leave me. I was once fired from Iceland for wearing blue sunglasses on the till, and for a while, I knocked on the doors of people who hadn’t paid their TV licences.
Kris appeared to get his big break while working in a bar, where he met someone from the industry.
His fame grew even more after securing roles in films like Love Actually and the comedy series My Family.
I went from hiding under my bed from the landlord because I couldn’t pay my rent, to flying over to the Toronto film festival to promote my first lead role in a film 18 months later,
he said
I would get recognised daily. Since then, it hasn’t stopped, but I don’t mind – it’s a small price to pay for what is a wonderful job.
He added

This wasn’t the only setback Kris experienced in his career. His show Sanditon was cancelled before eventually being brought back. Sanditon, based on Jane Austen’s unfinished novel, made its return for a second series in July 2022 after being axed following its first season, which struggled to capture audience interest.
Speaking to RadioTimes about the show’s revival, Kris said: “It is the first show I’ve been on that has been cancelled and then reinstated.
The fans did that after it took off in America, organising an incredible campaign to bring the show back.
Beyond Paradise is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
