Ben Stiller Says Comedy Faces New Challenges in Today’s Political Climate: ‘Speaking Truth to Power’ Remains Vital
Ben Stiller believes comedy is under greater pressure than ever before and says it’s now more important for comedians to stay fearless.
In a recent interview with Radio Times, the Severance director and star addressed how the current political environment has made the art of comedy increasingly difficult.
We live in a world where taking chances with comedy is more challenging. You’re seeing that front and center in our country. But I think it’s important that comedians keep doing what they’re doing, speaking truth to power and being free to say what they want. That’s the most important thing.
Stiller said.
Freedom of expression in comedy has been a recurring debate in Hollywood, especially following the temporary suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live! after host Jimmy Kimmel made on-air remarks about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. ABC pulled the show from air on September 17, before reinstating it on September 22.
Stiller also warned that social media poses another serious challenge to modern comedy. He noted that platforms like TikTok and Instagram have shortened audience attention spans and changed how humor is consumed.
You have things that go out to huge audiences very quickly. I think we’ve reduced our attention spans down a little bit. I feel lucky to have grown up in the analogue world.
he explained.
A major comedic force since the late 1990s, Stiller has starred in and directed numerous hit films including Happy Gilmore, Meet the Parents, Zoolander, Anchorman, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and Tropic Thunder. His continued advocacy for creative freedom underscores his belief that comedy’s greatest strength lies in its ability to challenge power and provoke thought even in turbulent times.
