Captain Glenn Shephard hinted that there will be some really intense moments in Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5. These include a near disaster where the yacht comes dangerously close to another boat at night.
First Officer Gary King is seen rushing with the crew to stop something bad from happening, saying, “That boat is getting close.” Captain Glenn also shared with Entertainment Weekly that this scary situation occurs because of bad weather, and the yacht either barely avoids a crash or might even hit another boat.

When the weather’s bad and people expect it, they take precautions. It’s thunderstorms, which are what catches people off guard.
Captain Glenn says
He recalls a recent storm that beached “a lot of boats.” Adding that many boat crashes result from unexpected bad weather.

In season 3, deckhand Tom Pearson was blamed for not reacting fast enough during a late-night anchor watch when there was bad weather. He waited too long to wake up Captain Glenn and Gary; by then, the sailing yacht was already in danger.

Luckily, the crew could avoid a disaster, but Tom was fired.
I was very impressed because the weather wasn’t so great. We have an issue with another boat. There’s almost a collision. Maybe there’s a collision, I’m not going to say.
he says of how his deck team reacts
Even though Captain Glenn was happy with how the deck team handled the situation, he wasn’t satisfied with the crew’s behavior this season. In the season 5 trailer, Captain Glenn tells the crew:
You guys went out with the guests, I set some ground rules, two drinks maximum.
But the crew breaks these rules. The crew runs around the boat while drunk in one part of the trailer. Chief engineer Davide Morosi’s face is cut and bleeding, with blood all over the white banquet couch.
Captain Glenn was furious when he woke up to see what had happened. He pulled the crew out of their beds to discuss the situation’s seriousness.
Absolutely dangerous, silly, but also creating hard work that we don’t have time for. He made it clear that this kind of thing cannot happen again.
Captain Glenn told Entertainment Weekly about the creq’s behaviour
It seems Gary might have something to do with why Davide’s face was bleeding, as his name is heard in the trailer while Davide walks away laughing (and bleeding). Captain Glenn says that while Gary has grown over the years, he’s still not fully there yet.
I’ve seen a lot of progress, and I’ve seen Gary growing up. He’s trying to move forward, but I also see him doing silly things, so he’s not quite there yet. I definitely saw progress, but I guess you see a couple relapses and he’s just up to silly stuff. I think he realizes though it’s time for him to grow up.

Captain Glenn will fire someone this season, too.
