Sally Bretton, best known for playing Martha Lloyd in the BBC shows Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise, has revealed that leaving the popular detective series in 2017 wasn’t something she really wanted to do. Sally joined the show as Martha, the fiancée of Detective Humphrey Goodman (played by Kris Marshall), and made her first appearance in 2017.
Viewers quickly grew fond of her as she rekindled a past romance with Humphrey, which led to him leaving the island of Saint Marie for London. While speaking on This Morning, Sally said she would have been happy to stay on the show longer. When asked if she was ready to leave the beautiful Caribbean setting, she gave a clear answer: “No!”
I was only out there for four or five weeks. I didn’t get any of the hurricanes; I got it at just the perfect time. I had an amazing time.

With great excitement, Sally took on Martha and Humphrey’s growing story in the spin-off Beyond Paradise, set in Shipton Abbott, Devon, where the couple begins their journey into fostering after their emotional experience with IVF.

Eager to return as Martha in the BBC One follow-up, Sally has fully embraced the new direction her character is taking.
I was part of Kris exit storyline from the Caribbean, and then we were in the first lockdown, and the phone rang. I was like, ‘Oh my God!’. Even if it doesn’t happen, it was just three weeks of thinking about that while the world had stopped. It was to have something to sink my teeth into.
she recalled during her chat with This Morning hosts Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary
The series also includes Open All Hours star Barbara Flynn as Martha’s mother, Anne, and Zahra Ahmadi, who plays DS Esther Williams, Humphrey’s colleague at the Shipton Abbott police station.
Dylan Llewellyn and Felicity Montagu round out the cast as fellow officers and team members working with Humphrey.

Series three of Beyond Paradise, which aired earlier this year, showed Humphrey and Martha in a better place as they continued their fostering journey.
But the season ended on a bittersweet note, as the couple had to say goodbye to their foster child, Rosie.
