The popular show “Babylon Berlin” is returning for its fifth and final season! They’ve just announced that they’ll be filming eight new episodes this fall.
The show is made by X-Filme Creative Pool, ARD Degeto, SWR, WDR, Radio Bremen, and Beta Film. Last year, there was worry that the show might end because Sky Deutschland, a big part of the production, was pulling out of making new shows. But Beta Film said they were talking with the German broadcaster ARD and the producers at X Filme to find a way to keep the show going. And now they’ve figured it out! So, “Babylon Berlin” fans can look forward to more upcoming episodes!

Season 5 of “Babylon Berlin,” based on Volker Kutscher’s book “The March Fallen,” tells the story of a very dark time in German history. It focuses on February 1933, when the Nazi party took control of the country. The season explores the serious consequences of that time in history.
The creators Henk Handlogten, Achim von Borries, and Tom Tykwer will return to write and direct the last season of “Babylon Berlin.” From the cast of Babylon Berlin, lead actors Volker Bruch and Liv Lisa Fries also return for the final season.

In a statement together, Handloegten, von Borries, and Tykwer said:
“In the final season of ‘Babylon Berlin,’ we focused on February 1933. Germany faced incredible upheaval during this month. Our characters like Gereon Rath and Charlotte Ritter will confront tough choices: follow the new rules, risk their lives by opposing them, hideaway, or flee the country. This pivotal moment in history also offers a chance to alter its course at the eleventh hour potentially.”
During its time on air, “Babylon Berlin” was sold to over 140 countries and was watched over 94 million times on Germany’s ARD Mediathek alone. It won many awards, including the first European Achievement in Fiction Series Award at the European Film Awards, four German Television Awards, the top prize at the Seoul International Drama Awards, the Austrian Television Award ROMY for “TV Event of the Year,” the Premios Ondas in Spain, and the Magnolia Award at the Shanghai TV Festival.
