The movie Apartment 7A might have started with a low rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but it’s now a big hit on streaming platforms.
Directed by Natalie Erika James, this movie is a prequel to Rosemary’s Baby (1968). Julia Garner stars as Terry Gionoffrio, a dancer with big dreams who rents a room from a strange older couple, played by Dianne Wiest and Kevin McNally. Although it mainly got bad reviews, it was released on Paramount+ on September 27 and has become very popular.

According to new information from Reelgood, Apartment 7A ranked as the fifth most-watched movie in the U.S. for September 26 – October 2.
Among all streaming content, it ranks tenth overall. While it beats some other movies like Challengers (2024) and The Fall Guy (2024), it couldn’t surpass titles like Killer Heat (2024) and Inside Out 2 (2024). Wolfs (2024) took the number one spot.

Critics agree that Garner does a great job as Terry, but they also say the movie feels too much like a prequel with predictable moments.
It doesn’t create its unique identity and stays in the shadow of Rosemary’s Baby. However, audiences seem to like it more. On Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score is 71%, which, while not unique, is still better than the critic reviews.
Since Apartment 7A is only available on streaming, no box office can measure its success. But if it continues to do well in viewership, it could be considered a moderate success. Streaming platforms don’t usually share detailed data, like how many people watched the movie or how many new subscribers it brought in.

The movie’s budget is also unknown, which would affect what kind of numbers it needs to do well.
In the end, Apartment 7A doesn’t offer much new because it has to tie into Rosemary’s Baby, but Garner’s performance and the connection to the famous movie still make it a popular choice on Paramount+.
