Anne Hathaway announced that she is returning for “Princess Diaries 3.” She confirmed the news on Instagram after a report from Deadline revealed that the movie’s new director is Adele Lim.
Hathaway shared a video that showed clips of her younger characters, Mia Thermopolis and Queen Clarisse, played by Julie Andrews, both saying “Shut up!” and counting to three.
Adele Lim, who wrote Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” (2021), is now a director and made her first movie with Lionsgate’s comedy “Joy Ride” (2023), starring Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu.
Lim has also worked as a writer and producer on shows like “One Tree Hill” and “Lethal Weapon,” and was a co-showrunner for “Star-Crossed.” She wrote the movie “Crazy Rich Asians,” directed by Jon Chu and based on Kevin Kwan’s book.
Anne Hathaway’s latest role was in Prime Video’s “The Idea of You“ (2024), playing Solène Marchand alongside Nicholas Galitzine. This romantic comedy is based on a book by Robinne Lee. Before that, Hathaway acted in “Mother’s Instinct” (2024) as Céline, “She Came to Me” (2023) as Patricia Jessup-Lauddem, and “Eileen“ (2023) as Rebecca.
Hathaway is also set to return for a sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006). The sequel, written by the original writer, Aline Brosh McKenna, was confirmed in July. Debra Martin Chase will produce “Princess Diaries 3,” with executive producers Naia Cucukov and Melissa Stack. Flora Greeson is writing the screenplay.
The first “Princess Diaries” movie came out in 2001, and it was a big moment for Anne Hathaway as she played Mia Thermopolis, a teen who finds out she’s a princess. The second movie, “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement,” came out in 2004, the same year as Hathaway’s film “Ella Enchanted.”
There is also a thing about The Princess Diaries movies, that makes fans want it more.
However, the question of whether the original cast will return for the third movie is not confirmed. Julie Andrews, who played Queen Clarisse, has mentioned she’s unsure if she’d be part of it. Garry Marshall directed the first two movies, and the scripts were written by Meg Cabot, Gina Wendkos, and Shonda Rhimes for the second movie.
