Author Andy Weir shares his honest thoughts on the upcoming Ryan Gosling movie adaptation of Project Hail Mary while at San Diego Comic-Con. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and based on Weir’s novel of the same name, the upcoming sci-fi film stars Gosling as Ryland Grace, a surprising astronaut hero tasked with saving Earth as the sun begins to die.
For Gosling, Project Hail Mary follows last year’s hit The Fall Guy, and it reunites him with co-stars Milana Vayntrub, Lionel Boyce, Liz Kingsman, Sandra Hüller, Ken Leung, and James Ortiz. The movie is expected to release in theaters in March 2026.

During the movie’s panel at SDCC, attended by ScreenRant, Weir revealed he’s seen early versions of Project Hail Mary and is very happy with what he’s seen. Check out his comment below:
I’ve seen cuts of the film, and it’s really good, guys. It’s really good. These guys, they’re amazing directors, everybody knows that. I couldn’t be happier with how things turned out.
Weir also shares his appreciation for Drew Goddard, who wrote the movie’s script.
I couldn’t ask for better talent in every aspect… we waited for Drew… We had to wait several months for him to finish [the project he was working on.]
It’s worth noting that Weir probably wouldn’t take the stage at SDCC just to criticize the adaptation, but his excitement is still a good sign. Weir is best known for writing The Martian, which was successfully turned into a hit film by Ridley Scott in 2015.
Project Hail Mary might be on track to reach that same level of success. Goddard, on the other hand, wrote the screenplays for The Martian, World War Z (2013), and The Cabin in the Woods (2011), among others. He was also a writer on Lost and created Netflix’s Daredevil series.
Project Hail Mary has the potential to reaffirm Gosling’s box office power.
Weir’s comments could hint that Gosling, known for Barbie, might have another hit coming. The Fall Guy did well with critics but didn’t make a big splash at the box office. Project Hail Mary could be the film that brings Gosling’s box office power back.

The Martian was a big success partly because it mixed sci-fi with a unique sense of humor, something that’s become a key part of Weir’s writing. The Project Hail Mary book has a similar tone, and Lord and Miller might be the ideal directors for it based on their past work.
Gosling has long been praised for his dramatic roles, but Barbie proved he’s great with comedy too. Project Hail Mary looks like it will highlight both sides of his talent, with a serious story that still has funny moments. There’s still a while to go before the movie hits theaters, but Weir’s positive comments give fans a good reason to look forward to it.
