Amazon MGM Studios is moving forward with a TV series adaptation of the popular video game series “Mass Effect,” exclusively revealed by Variety.
Daniel Casey will serve as the writer and executive producer for this adaptation. He’ll be joined by Karim Zreik, who will also executive produce under his production company, Cedar Tree Productions, along with Ari Arad and EA’s Michael Gamble. Cedar Tree Productions is currently in a partnership deal with Amazon MGM Studios.
The storyline details are still under wraps.
The project was first mentioned back in 2021, when Amazon began discussions about making a “Mass Effect” TV series, but until now, there have been no further updates. Previously, there were multiple attempts to develop a “Mass Effect” movie, but none of these plans came to fruition.
The first “Mass Effect” game came out in 2007 and got a lot of praise for how exciting and well-made it was. Since then, three more main games have been released, with the latest, “Mass Effect: Andromeda,” arriving in 2017. There are also several mobile games in the series, plus an animated movie, novels, comic books, and other cool stuff related to “Mass Effect.”
The story in the first three “Mass Effect” games is all about Commander Shepard, a human soldier in the 22nd century who fights to save humanity from a powerful alien race called the Reapers. In “Mass Effect: Andromeda,” the story jumps even further into the future and follows a new hero on a big adventure. A fifth game is also being planned. BioWare makes the “Mass Effect” series and is now published by EA.
Casey recently worked on the screenplay for the action movie “F9: The Fast Saga.” He’s also known for writing the sci-fi drama “Kin” and helped rework the script for the movie “10 Cloverfield Lane.” His representation includes CAA, Writ Large, and Hansen Jacobson.
Zreik was an executive at Marvel Television when Jeph Loeb led it, although that division is no longer active. While he was with Marvel, Zreik worked as an executive producer on popular shows like “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones,” “Luke Cage,” “The Punisher,” and “Legion,” as well as several other hit series. Ginsburg Daniels Kallis represents him.
Arad has produced movie versions of well-known games like “Borderlands,” “Uncharted,” and “Ghost in the Shell.” He has also worked as an executive producer on movies like “Iron Man,” “Ghost Rider,” and the “Blade” TV series from 2006.
