Fede Álvarez, the director of Alien: Romulus, gave an update on a possible sequel, but fans might have to wait a while. He shared that he and 20th Century Studios are excited to return to the Alien series, but they won’t move forward until he figures out the perfect story to tell. Right now, he’s working on ideas with his co-writer, Rodo Sayagues.
Alien: Romulus hit theaters in August and made $350.8 million worldwide on an $80 million budget. It’s the second most successful movie in the Alien series, behind 2012’s Prometheus, which made $402.4 million. Romulus also got the best reviews for an Alien movie since Aliens by James Cameron, scoring 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. While some people criticized it for using CGI to bring back Ian Holm and for referencing older Alien movies a lot, many fans thought it was a great return to the series’ roots.
After the success of Alien: Romulus, 20th Century Studios announced a sequel in October with Álvarez returning as director. Since then, there hasn’t been much news, but Romulus has been in the spotlight again because it’s now streaming on Hulu and Disney+. To celebrate its release, a prequel comic was shared, telling the scary events that happened at Renaissance Station.
It’s nice to see that Álvarez isn’t being rushed to make a sequel. Even though Romulus was a big hit, the studio could have pushed for a quick release to keep the excitement going. From Álvarez’s comments, it seems like they might not make a sequel at all if they can’t come up with the perfect story. However, since everyone involved wants to continue the story, it’s unlikely the sequel won’t happen. It’s good to know they won’t make it just because the first movie was a success.

Since Álvarez and Sayagues aren’t being rushed, they have plenty of time to create an exciting story that mixes sci-fi and horror. If it takes longer than expected, 20th Century Studios has other ways to keep the Alien series going. Ridley Scott, who’s always busy, has hinted that he’s working on a new Alien movie, which could go in many directions. The Alien franchise is very popular, so the studio won’t wait too long to bring back the xenomorph to scare audiences again.
