Michael Pruss, the producer of Alien: Romulus, said that the next Alien movie might not continue the same story. The newest movie in Ridley Scott’s famous sci-fi horror series is Romulus, directed by Fede Alvarez. It stars Cailee Spaeny as Rain and David Jonsson as Andy, who are part of a young crew that finds a dangerous alien (Xenomorph) on a space station.
The movie was a big hit, with good reviews from critics and strong box office earnings. After its success, news came out that Alvarez was working on another Alien movie.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant at the Saturn Awards, Michael Pruss gave an update on the Alien: Romulus sequel. He said that the movie is still in the early planning stage. Right now, they are considering all kinds of ideas, even ones that don’t directly continue Romulus’s story. However, they haven’t decided yet which idea they will go with.
I am involved in the sequel with Ridley and our friends and colleagues and Fede, course. We are working on ideas for another Alien film, which may not be a direct sequel to Romulus, but it certainly is a part of the existing franchise.
Pruss said
At the moment we’re doing what I call sitting around tables and drinking water. We’re discussing ideas. Good movies take time, and I just worked on Gladiator II, and that took 25 years to conjure up a sequel. It takes a period of time to really examine ideas and understand if those ideas are worth pushing. Sometimes they are, and sometimes they aren’t, and we just have to submit to the best idea.
We are in an early phase, but we hope to really have something special to talk about as the year goes on. I promise it won’t be 25 years; it’ll be sooner than that, but I don’t have more specifics. We aren’t yet in more of a specific phase than just working with Fede and Ridley to try and come up with something great that will frankly garner the same reaction. Romulus was worth the wait, right? People loved it, they embraced it, and so it takes time to do it. But we want to give you something great.
After Alien: Covenant (2017) got mixed reactions, director Fede Alvarez decided to take the Alien series in a new direction. His movie, Alien: Romulus, introduces a brand-new group of characters and a fresh story.

By the end of the film, only Rain and Andy survive, and they set off on a journey to a place called Yvaga III. There have been hints that the next film will bring Rain and Andy back, and Alvarez recently shared some clues about what might happen next in an interview with Empire.
I think it’ll be so exciting to go with characters you know from this movie, to a place in the Alien franchise that we’ve never been before, and to discover things that you’ve never seen before.
Michael Pruss’ comment suggests that Fede Alvarez and Ridley Scott are not entirely set on continuing Rain and Andy’s story. Since the movie is still in the early planning stage, they brainstorm different ideas and look at all possible directions for the story.
However, both Alvarez and Steve Asbell, the head of 20th Century Studios, have said they would like to bring Rain and Andy back. So, there’s still a good chance that fans will see these Alien: Romulus characters again in the next movie.
One of the issues with Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant was that the main character, Elizabeth Shaw (played by Noomi Rapace), died off-screen and didn’t return in the second movie. Since fans really liked Rain and Andy in Alien: Romulus, it would be exciting to see them come back.
The first two Alien movies were successful partly because Sigourney Weaver played Ripley in both. Rain could become a similar strong and important character for the series, just like Ripley.
Connecting the movies would help make the story more prominent and connected. Watching Rain and Andy grow and change over time could lead to inspiring new stories. Right now, no final decisions have been made about what will happen after Alien: Romulus, but Rain and Andy have become interesting characters who deserve more adventures.
