One of the stars of Alien: Covenant wants a new movie focused on Michael Fassbender’s character, David. The Alien series began in 1979 with Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror classic. In 2012, Scott directed the prequel Prometheus, introducing Fassbender as David, a mysterious and morally questionable android. David returned in the 2017 sequel Covenant, and plans were in place for a third prequel starring him. However, the upcoming 2024 movie Romulus takes place in a different timeline with a completely new cast of characters.
In a recent interview with Inverse about her new show The Agency, Katherine Waterston, who starred in Alien: Covenant alongside Michael Fassbender, said the third David movie should still happen. She called David an “amazing character” and urged the creators to “keep David coming.” Waterston also guessed that her character, Daniels, might have escaped the pod where she was trapped at the end of Covenant. Even if she isn’t part of a new movie, she said she’d still love to watch it in theaters. Read her full quote below:
Even though Prometheus and Covenant are getting more appreciation now, it doesn’t seem likely that the next Alien movie will continue the David trilogy. While the first prequel, Prometheus, was a big success, the second movie, Covenant, didn’t do as well. To address complaints that Prometheus didn’t include a fully grown Xenomorph, Covenant added the iconic creature, but it still struggled with critics and at the box office. This poor performance likely makes producers hesitant to create another movie in the same style. Check out how both prequels performed on Rotten Tomatoes and at the box office below:
Title | RT Critic Score | RT Audience Score | Budget | Box Office |
---|---|---|---|---|
Prometheus (2012) | 73% | 68% | ~$120 million | $403.4 million |
Alien: Covenant (2017) | 65% | 55% | ~$100 million | $240.9 million |
Although Prometheus is still the highest-earning movie in the Alien series, the franchise seems to have moved on over the last seven years. David’s fate after Alien: Covenant is still a mystery. Meanwhile, the series is expanding with new projects like Romulus, which takes place between the original 1979 movie and its 1986 sequel. There’s also the upcoming FX series Alien: Earth, a prequel that doesn’t currently include Michael Fassbender as David.
Even though Waterston’s hopes for more Alien movies featuring David might not come true, Romulus proves that the franchise hasn’t completely ignored the prequels. The movie connects directly to Prometheus by using key story elements from it and ties them to the original Alien series.
While this doesn’t guarantee that David’s story will continue, future movies might at least mention his adventures. Romulus was a big success, earning $350.9 million on an $80 million budget, which could influence the direction of the franchise.
