It seems like Elden Ring movie director Alex Garland went all out to win FromSoftware boss Hidetaka Miyazaki’s approval for the adaptation. Garland, best known for Ex Machina and Civil War and a huge Elden Ring fan himself, is directing the movie for A24, with Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin — who helped create the original game — on board as a producer.
According to a new report from the New Yorker, Garland wrote an “epic” 160-page draft with 40 extra pages of visuals as a spec script, then flew to Japan to pitch it to the game’s “elusive” creator, Hidetaka Miyazaki. Clearly, that meeting went well.

The Elden Ring movie is now officially happening, though details are scarce. What we do know is that Garland is an Elden Ring expert. Back in June, he told IGN he was on his seventh playthrough of FromSoftware’s massive fantasy RPG and even shared which boss gave him the hardest time.

Speaking to IGN before the release of 28 Years Later — the zombie apocalypse film he wrote 23 years after the first movie — Garland revealed the toughest boss fight for him in all of Elden Ring: Malenia, Blade of Miquella.
It’s Malenia who’s the tough one. I’m now on my seventh playthrough of that game. I’ve leveled up, I’ve got lots of juice, and a cool sword, and stuff like that, and I just throw myself at them again, and again, and again, and again. That was the technique I learned with Dark Souls. It’s not that you get better, it’s more like monkeys and typewriters. You just keep doing it, and eventually, one day they’re dead.
Garland explained
In June, George R. R. Martin also expressed his excitement that Alex Garland will direct Elden Ring’s movie adaptation. Writing on his blog, Martin called Garland a “first rate director” and described production company A24 as “kickass.” Overall, Martin said his current mood after hearing the announcement was “hopeful,” and he even shared a YouTube video titled “Why the Elden Ring Movie WON’T SUCK.”
While Martin is clearly enthusiastic about the project, there’s no indication that he’s actually involved. In fact, he’s already busy with several other projects, including an upcoming animated Hercules movie.
Very little is known about the Elden Ring adaptation so far, but reports suggest Garland is eager to work again with Heartstopper and Warfare actor Kit Connor for an important role. The movie has not yet started production and does not have a release date.
