Earlier this year, the cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia showed up at Willard R. Abbott Elementary School. This summer, the crossover continues—with the Abbott Elementary crew visiting Paddy’s Pub. William Stanford Davis, who plays Mr. Johnson on Abbott Elementary, told Joe Schmidt that the second part of the crossover will be a bit edgier, since Always Sunny is known for its more adult, R-rated style.
You’ve already seen the Abbott [Elementary] portion of it, [but not] the Always Sunny portion. But you know, you got saints and sinners everywhere. And Abbott is the saint part of it, because I can’t tell you what these guys are going to be doing, but it’s pretty crazy, and I’d get in trouble. I was told specifically, do not talk about that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia part of the crossover.
He happily talked about his good times working on the Abbott Elementary part of the crossover—without upsetting Always Sunny star and showrunner Rob McElhenney.
I don’t want to piss him off. That was so cool, man, working with them, especially the time I spent with Danny DeVito was, really, just outstanding. Such a giant man, just a giant professional, that I just had a ball.
Season 17 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which will feature their part of the crossover, is coming out this summer.
In the ninth episode of Abbott Elementary Season 4, titled “Volunteers,” the school finally seemed to catch a break with a surprising wave of new helpers. But that luck quickly turned when it became clear the volunteers were actually the chaotic crew from Paddy’s Pub — widely known as the worst bar in Philadelphia — and they were only there because of court-ordered community service. Still, the staff tried to make the best of it. Mr. Johnson (William Stanford Davis) teamed up with Frank (Danny DeVito) to deal with the school’s raccoon issue, while Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) and Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) gave Charlie (Charlie Day) some reading lessons. Mac (Rob McElhenney) helped Ava (Janelle James) blackmail a local golf course using staged photos, and Dee (Kaitlin Olson) made a failed attempt to win over Gregory (Tyler James Williams) from Janine (Quinta Brunson).

Even after the crossover wraps up, Davis will still be working with McElhenney and Day—he’s appearing in Side Quest, a spin-off of their hit show Mythic Quest, which debuts on Apple TV+ later this month.
