Earlier this year, Abbott Elementary and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia crossed paths in a special Philly-themed crossover. The first part happened at the ABC set of Abbott, so the wild behavior of the Paddy’s Pub gang had to be toned down.
But now, the second part will happen on FX’s Always Sunny, so get ready to see a very different side of Abbott’s teachers. Quinta Brunson, the creator and star of Abbott Elementary, talked about this other side during her visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live.
During her chat with Jimmy Kimmel—which also touched on meeting Jill Biden at the Super Bowl and celebrating Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary—Brunson mentioned that the Always Sunny part of the crossover is “way more raunchy than ours.”
It was fun! It was fun to see what Janine, the character I play, sounds like when she says words I can’t say on this show.
She said
Brunson also shared her experience working with “national treasure” Danny DeVito. She said he was completely up for everything the Abbott writers asked, including a funny scene where he ended up in a raccoon trap.
However, she made it clear that he was only in the small cage for two hours—not two days—and they didn’t trick him into it with a Jersey Mike’s sandwich, as Kimmel joked. You can watch it all unfold when It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s 17th season kicks off on FX on July 9.
In the Abbott Elementary episode called “Volunteers,” the staff at Abbott were thrilled to get some much-needed extra help. But Melissa (Lisa Ann Walter) quickly realized that the “volunteers” were actually workers from the worst bar in the city. They were only there because they had to complete court-ordered community service after dumping 50 t-shirts, 100 gallons of baby oil, and a Cybertruck into the Schuylkill River.

Things got wild: Dee (Kaitlin Olson) tried to steal Gregory (Tyler James Williams) away from Janine, Principal Ava (Janelle James) made Mac (Rob McElhenney) her reluctant assistant, and Frank (Danny DeVito) teamed up with janitor Mr. Johnson (William Stanford Davis) to deal with the school’s raccoon problem. The crossover had a happy ending for one Paddy’s Pub worker: with help from Melissa and Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph), Charlie (Charlie Day) finally learned how to read.
After the success of the Always Sunny crossover, Abbott showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker are open to doing more crossovers in the future. One idea they mentioned is with The Pitt, a medical drama set in Pittsburgh that films just across the street from Abbott.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will kick off its seventeenth season on July 9, featuring the second half of its crossover with Abbott Elementary.
