The movie Hereditary, a spooky and thrilling film from A24, has become popular again on Netflix. Right now, it’s ranked number 8 on the list of top 10 movies being watched in the U.S. on Netflix.
The movie Hereditary has been on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies list since January 16, starting at #6. It’s now at #8 and has stayed there for a few days. Released in 2018, the movie stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd, and Gabriel Byrne. It tells the spooky story of a family dealing with scary supernatural events and their emotional struggles after losing a loved one.
It was his first movie, Hereditary was written and directed by Ari Aster. Critics loved it, giving it a high score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film became available on Netflix earlier this month. It was also a big success in theaters, earning $87.8 million even though it only cost $10 million. At the time, it was the highest-earning movie for A24, until Everything Everywhere All at Once took that title in 2022.

Ari Aster was praised for creating a movie that mixes creepy horror with deep family emotions and grief. To give the film a unique look, the sets were built to resemble a dollhouse, which matched the job of Toni Collette’s character, who makes tiny models for a living.

Right now, Hereditary is the top horror movie on Netflix’s U.S. charts. Other movies in the Top 10 include Netflix originals Back in Action (#1) and Ad Vitam (#2), along with Despicable Me (#4), Despicable Me 2 (#3), and others like Hotel Transylvania 2 (#6) and The Boss Baby (#10).
Toni Collette, who has been in other spooky movies like The Sixth Sense and the funny horror film Krampus, first didn’t want to be in a horror movie again. But after hearing Ari Aster’s idea of making a deeper, scarier movie about life and emotions, she decided to join the project.
You just don’t expect a film like this to come out of that guy. He just really understood the dynamics in the family, has such an understanding of what it is to be human, what it is to experience loss.
After making Hereditary, Ari Aster created two more scary movies: Midsommar in 2019, starring Florence Pugh, and Beau Is Afraid in 2023 with Joaquin Phoenix. His next movie will be a modern Western comedy called Eddington, also from A24. It will star Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone, Luke Grimes, Austin Butler, and others. We don’t know when Eddington will come out yet.
