A24 is bringing two of its best movies, Moonlight and Spring Breakers, back to theaters in IMAX, but only for one night each. According to Variety, Barry Jenkins’s 2016 coming-of-age drama Moonlight will hit the big screen on February 27 as part of the A24 x IMAX Present series, which shows A24 classics in IMAX for the first time. The second film, Harmony Korine’s 2013 crime comedy Spring Breakers, will follow on March 19.
Moonlight made a huge impact when it first came out, winning three Oscars, including Best Picture at the 2017 Academy Awards. The movie tells Chiron’s story through three stages of his life: his childhood (played by Alex R. Hibbert), teenage years (Ashton Sanders), and adulthood (Trevante Rhodes). It shows the struggles he faces growing up as a gay Black man while dealing with abuse.
Spring Breakers also became a big hit for A24, earning much more than its small budget. It quickly turned into a cult classic, known as one of the best spring break movies ever. The story follows four college girls who rob a restaurant to pay for a trip to Florida. There, they meet a criminal named Alien (James Franco) and get pulled into a wild world of crime, drugs, and violence.

Bringing old movies back to theaters isn’t a new idea. Anniversary screenings have been popular for years. Recently, John Wick returned for its 10th anniversary, and Godzilla Minus One hit theaters again to celebrate 70 years of the King of Monsters, this time with 13 minutes of special bonus footage.

Lately, studios have stepped up their re-release plans, even for movies not tied to an anniversary. According to Variety, at least 27 older films played in over 100 US theaters throughout 2024. This included The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which came back ahead of The War of the Rohirrim’s release in December.
A24, like many other studios, is bringing some of its best movies back to theaters. The company started its screening series in March 2024 by re-releasing Alex Garland’s Ex Machina, just as excitement was building for his next A24 film, Civil War. Other hits like Hereditary, Midsommar, Uncut Gems, and Everything Everywhere All at Once have also returned to the big screen. Now, Moonlight and Spring Breakers are getting their turn, and they’re definitely worth watching.
