HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off may have a much longer future than fans initially expected, thanks to extensive story ideas shared by author George R.R. Martin.
Showrunner Ira Parker revealed that Martin has already provided outlines for up to a dozen unpublished Dunk and Egg novellas, potentially giving A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms enough material to run for many seasons.
“He has shared with me about 10 to 12 more little outlines for books, for novellas, taking Dunk and Egg all the way through their life,” Parker told The National.
While the long-term possibilities are clear, Parker emphasized that the creative team is currently focused on the early stages of the series. “Right now, we’re focused on one, and we’ll see how the world responds to that. We’re making two at the moment,” he continued.
Parker also shared his personal hopes for the future of the show, adding, “Hopefully, everybody likes it and we get to keep doing these. Certainly, I love doing it. I love writing in this world, and it’s a wonderful story. So, I hope we get to make as many of these as possible.”
As of 2010, Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg series consists of three novellas: The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight. The Hedge Knight has been adapted into the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Whether the additional “10 to 12” stories will ever be written remains uncertain, but the television adaptation could allow the duo’s journey to continue on screen regardless.
Set roughly 90 years before Game of Thrones, the series follows hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall, known as Dunk, portrayed by Peter Claffey, and his young squire Egg, played by Dexter Sol Ansell, as they navigate the competitive world of Westerosi tourneys.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is scheduled to premiere on HBO and Sky on January 18.
