When a book series becomes a TV show or movie, changes are often needed to fit the new format. This is true for the upcoming Netflix series “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder,” based on Holly Jackson’s book. In an interview with Variety, Jackson discussed the challenges of turning her book into a TV script.
“If I hadn’t gotten involved and given my advice, the show wouldn’t look like it does now,” Jackson told Variety. She’s proud of the final show, though she wasn’t the one writing it. The series follows 17-year-old Pip (Emma Myers) as she investigates a high school student’s murder. Variety also mentions that some of Ravi Singh’s (Zain Iqbal) lines were cut in the adaptation.
Jackson talked about how carefully she worked with the showwriters. “I gave many suggestions and pointed out things I thought book fans would want to see because they might feel let down if those parts were missing.”
“But in the end, I didn’t make the final decisions. I completely understand why book fans wanted to see their favorite parts. I have a close connection with my readers, so I already knew how much those moments meant to them.”

The book and the show have a similar plot. Pip investigates the murder of Andie Bell (India Lillie Davies), who the community thinks was killed by her boyfriend, Sal Singh, in a murder-suicide. Sal is also the older brother of Pip’s boyfriend, Ravi. As Pip digs deeper into the case, she starts to uncover that Sal might not be as guilty as everyone has believed for the past five years.
Dolly Wells is adapting the series, with Poppy Cogan, Zia Ahmed, Ajoke Ibironke, and Ruby Thomas writing the script. Jackson told Variety that she was deeply involved in the show, giving script notes and working non-stop for a year. She says her input changed the show a lot. Fans will discover if the changes are good or bad when the six-part series premieres on Netflix on Thursday.
“A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” will start streaming on Netflix in the US on August 1. It’s already available on the UK BBC. Watch the trailer below:
