The 28 Years Later trailer is officially the most-watched horror trailer of 2024 and the second most-watched trailer ever.
Released on December 10, the trailer pulled in an incredible 60.2 million views worldwide in its first 24 hours. So far, it has reached a total of 141.6 million views globally. This makes it the second-biggest trailer of all time, just behind It Chapter Two, which hit almost 100 million views in its first 24 hours.
The 28 Years Later trailer got more views than trailers for big movies like The Nun, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, Halloween, and even this year’s Smile 2 and Nosferatu.
According to Deadline, Sony is responding to the excitement by making the original 2002 movie, 28 Days Later, directed by Danny Boyle, available to buy or rent starting tomorrow, December 18.
The idea for the movie started back in 2007, and after many delays, it’s finally set to release on June 20, 2025. It was filmed using iPhones, along with another sequel called 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. While Danny Boyle will produce The Bone Temple, Nia DaCosta will direct it.

There will be almost 20 years between the second and third movies, but a full 28 Years Later trilogy is in the works. Producer Andrew Macdonald confirmed in August that after The Bone Temple, a third movie is also planned.

28 Years Later is the third movie in the series, following the original 2002 film and its 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later. Cillian Murphy is returning to the franchise after his role in the first movie. New cast members include Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes, who are joining the series for the first time.
While Comer, Taylor-Johnson, and Fiennes appear in the trailer, Murphy is missing. Many fans on social media thought he might be playing a zombie-like character shown in the clip. However, The Guardian revealed that the character is actually played by model and art dealer Angus Neill.
Cillian Murphy is not just acting in 28 Years Later—he’s also working as an executive producer. Two years ago, he told NME that he was interested in returning to the franchise. He said,
The only issue is that I’m 20 years older… but whenever I see Danny [Boyle] or Alex [Garland], I bring it up. I showed the movie to my kids a few Halloweens ago, and they loved it. It’s amazing how well the film holds up, even after 20 years. I love the idea of coming back—it’s really exciting to me.
According to the movie’s official synopsis:
“It has been nearly 30 years since the rage virus broke out from a biological weapons lab. Despite strict quarantines, some people have managed to survive among the infected.
“One group lives on a small island, linked to the mainland by a single, heavily guarded bridge. When a member of the group ventures into the dangerous mainland, they uncover shocking secrets, strange wonders, and horrifying changes that have transformed both the infected and the remaining survivors.”
