The 2006 Nithari killings involved the abduction, sexual assault, and murder of children and young women in the village of Nithari, Noida. The case shocked the country because of its extreme violence and large number of victims.
The main suspects were Surinder Koli, a domestic servant, and Moninder Singh Pandher, his employer. They were arrested after police found the victims’ remains near Pandher’s house. Koli is said to have lured children with sweets. Once he had them close, he would kill them, desecrate their bodies, and throw the remains in a drain or in his backyard.
This case was terrifying and horrifying for many people. In the trials, Pandher was found guilty in two cases, and Koli was convicted in ten out of sixteen cases. Both men received death sentences.
However, in 2023, the Allahabad High Court overturned their convictions. The court decided to acquit them because there was not enough conclusive evidence. This decision caused a lot of debate and concern about the legal process in the case.
