Everything You Need to Know About Mickey 17

Superstar actor Robert Pattinson teams up with acclaimed South Korean director Bong Joon-ho for the latter’s eighth feature film. Its name is Mickey 17, and it will mark Bong’s return to sci-fi for the first time after Snowpiercer and Okja. Under the direction of such talented director, fans have high expectations from the film.
The film is adapted from Edward Ashton’s 2022 novel. In this film, Pattinson plays an expendable — a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize an ice planet — who refuses to let his replacement clone take his place.
The Mickey 17 trailer, also reveals how things get complicated when Pattinson doesn’t actually die. But his bosses have already created a new Mickey. Complications emerge. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, then this is the best time to play the trailer.
At its core, this film is a mind-bending sci-fi story with a unique premise. The film is based on the book Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. But like all Bong Joon Ho movies, we can expect plenty of surprises.
Mickey 17 stars Robert Pattinson as an “expendable”. What does that mean? Well, Mickey is part of a futuristic space mission. He constantly sent to perform dangerous jobs on an ice planet that frequently get him killed. If he dies during a mission (which happens frequently), no problem—they just regenerate him with his memories intact. But things get messy when one of the expendables survives a mission meant to kill him, and he gets entangled with the latest iteration of himself.
The film explores the moral dilemma of survival as Mickey must fight his own clone, raising questions about the value of life and the essence of one’s existence.

Why Is the Movie Called Mickey 17 Instead of Mickey 7?

You might be wondering; why the film’s title differs from the book? So, let me tell you, you are not alone — I was curious too! At CinemaCon 2024, Bong Joon Ho explaines that he has added his own creative twists in the movie which is based on Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton.
He further added, about the title;
The number is the number of times he died. I killed him 10 times more!
by Bong Joon Ho
Honestly, that line gave me chills! It’s such a bold move, and now I can’t wait to see how those extra deaths add to the story.
Why Mickey 17’s Release Date Keeps Changing?

The release date for Mickey 17 has been a bit of a moving target, and I can’t lie—it’s been frustrating but understandable. Originally it was set for March 29, 2024. Unfortunately, the film was delayed indefinitely due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.
Later it was rescheduled for January 31, 2025, but Warner Bros. ultimately shifted it again to April 18, 2025. He predicted an Easter weekend’s track record of success and the global availability of IMAX screens.
When the April 18 date became available, we quickly moved to secure it for Mickey 17. We’re thrilled with the new date, and very happy the film will be available to audiences in IMAX.
by Warner Bros. spokesperson
While the wait feels endless, knowing the studio is prioritizing a stellar release gives me hope it’ll be worth it!

What’s the Mickey 17 Age Rating?

A common question on forums like Reddit is whether the movie is suitable for families. While the Mickey 17 age rating hasn’t been confirmed yet, I’d bet on it being rated R.
Bong Joon Ho’s films often tackle mature themes, and with heavy topics like mortality and identity in the mix, this one seems geared more toward adult audiences.
Why Is Everyone Already Obsessed with Mickey 17?

There’s a reason everyone’s talking about this movie, from film critics to fans on Reddit. First off, it’s Bong Joon Ho’s follow-up to Parasite, which won four Oscars, including Best Picture. That alone makes it a must-watch.
But beyond that, the story itself feels incredibly timely. In an age where technology is advancing at breakneck speed, questions about identity, humanity, and our relationship with technology are more relevant than ever. Mickey 17 doesn’t just explore these themes—it dives headfirst into them.
Plus, the concept of an expendable character who can die and come back sounds like it’ll lead to some mind-bending twists. I wouldn’t be surprised if the film ends up being one of those movies where you walk out of the theater still trying to process what you just saw.
